Join the Bell Road Book Club, Thurs. Nov. 16 at 6:00 pm in the NCPL’s Makerspace, to discuss The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. 19-year-old Cussy, a book woman of the WPA’s packhorse library, guides us on an immersive journey deep into depression-era Appalachian Kentucky. Along the way we learn of her short-lived marriage and of unrelenting threats posed by both the rugged natural setting and a number of evil-intentioned individuals. Living with the stigma of a rare genetic blood disease, Cussy also reveals the devastating toll of stigmatization and discrimination, as she struggles to shares a love of reading and learning with her isolated and impoverished patrons.
